Why Gelert
? This release was named after Gelert, the brave and loyal hound of Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd.

SmarterU Gelert Release - Learning Management System

As Llywelyn was preparing for a hunt one day, all of his hounds except for Gelert appeared when called for; the hunting party left without him.

Returning to his castle later that day, Llywelyn discovered his infant son’s nursery in a state of disarray with the cradle upturned, Gelert on the scene with a bloody muzzle, and the baby nowhere in sight.

Suspecting the worst of his favorite hound, Llywelyn drew his sword and slay Gelert. Suddenly hearing a cry from under the cradle, Llywelyn turned it over to find both his son and the dead and bloodied body of a wolf.

Instantly recognizing the error he’d made, Llywelyn was overcome with grief and, as legend has it, never smiled again.

Why Togo? This release was named after Togo, the lead sled dog in the 1925 serum run to Nome, Alaska.

With its port closed for winter, Nome’s only link to the rest of the world was via the Iditarod Trail which spans 938 miles between Nome and Seward, AK.

Courageous and bold, Togo lead Leonhard Seppala’s sled team over 261 miles of the trail, including the most dangerous sections. This saved Nome from what surely would have become an epidemic had the anti-toxin not been successfully delivered.

SmarterU LMS - Corporate Training

Why Hachikō? This release was named after Hachikō, the loyal pup of Professor Ueno, an agricultural department professor at the University of Tokyo. Hachikō waited at Shibuya station everyday to meet the professor as he commuted home from work. Even after the professor had passed away, Hachikō continued to wait for him everyday for well over nine years.

Hachikō - SmarterU LMS - Corporate Training

Hachiko eventually became a national sensation in Japan. The faithfulness he showed was used as an example to all, as a spirit of family loyalty that everyone should strive to achieve.

Hachikō - SmarterU LMS - Corporate Training

In celebration of the upcoming Year of the Dog, all of our 2018 releases  are named after remarkable canines. Our first is named after Hachikō, a Japanese dog who exemplified loyalty and friendship.

Hachikō, whose name means ‘eight’ and ‘affectionate’ – likely due to being the eighth puppy born in his litter – was adopted in 1924 by Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor of Agriculture at the University of Tokyo. Soon after being adopted, Hachikō would walk with Professor Ueno to Shibuya station to see him off to work each morning, returning in the afternoon to meet and accompany him home.

One day the professor never came home on the afternoon train – he had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while giving a lecture and passed away – but Hachikō never gave up hope of seeing his dear friend again. For nine years, Hachikō returned to Shibuya station each afternoon, waiting for the professor to step out of his train.

Multiple statues paying homage to Hachikō have been erected, including one located within the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Tokyo reuniting this beloved pup with his dear Professor Ueno.
